Kevin John Murray Obituary

MURRAY, Kevin J. of Winchester, 73, died in his sleep at home on March 12, 2024. Beloved husband of Wendy Bittner and loving father of their three children, Michael, Daniel, and Laura.

The son of Barbara and Bartholomew Murray, Kevin was raised in Randolph, MA. He attended Syracuse University, from which he graduated with honors in 1972. He worked summers as a mail carrier out of the Randolph Post Office and returned after graduating. In 1975, on a leave-of-absence from the Postal Service, he graduated from Penn State, where he received a Masters of Public Administration. Upon completion, he returned to the Post Office. However, his testimony at the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on behalf of his local union and their President derailed the Post Office’s plans for his promotion. Undeterred, Kevin applied for, and transferred to, the NLRB in Boston as a Field Examiner. In 1981, he graduated Suffolk University’s School of Law (Nights) cum laude and became an attorney at the NLRB. During his entire tenure at the NLRB, he was a member of the NLRBU, Local One.

In 2013, Kevin retired from the NLRB, after 40 years of service with the federal government and went to the Commonwealth’s Department of Labor Relations, where he stayed until 2021.

Kevin was the epitome of a career government employee and public servant; he used his education, intellect, and good heart to work for the general welfare of all.

As a father, Kevin was devoted to his children, appearing wherever they were, from serving on the Board of Directors of the Government Center Childcare daycare center they attended, to coaching baseball and softball, along with serving on the Board of Sachem Youth Baseball & Softball, assisting their coaches in soccer, and attending every game they played from preschool through high school.

A season ticket holder and loyal Red Sox fan, he was never happier than when one of his kids accompanied him to see any Boston team play, but especially the Sox. Kevin was able to attend World Series games in ’75, ’86, ’04, ’07, ’13, and ’18. He was also an avid music fan and attended Woodstock in ’69, and an enthusiastic golfer who took many trips to Florida with his friends and golf clubs.

Kevin embodied the words “gentle man.” Soft-spoken and unassuming but determined and smart, he was the rock of the family, treating victory and defeat—on and off the field—as merely two sides of the same coin.

Kevin is also survived by his cherished brothers, Brian of Hyannis and Mark of Camden, Maine, and his wonderful sisters-in-law, Gail of Littleton and Sheila of Easthampton and their children Colin, Justin, Patrick, and Derek, as well as many other loving relatives and friends.

Memorial Visiting hours will be held at the Lane Funeral Home, 760 Main St. (Rte. 38), WINCHESTER on Saturday, March 23rd from 1 to 4 pm. Reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations in Kevin’s memory may be made to American Parkinson’s Disease Assoc., P.O. Box 61420, Staten Island, NY 10306 or at www.apdaparkinson.org.
