Herman C. Schreiber Obituary

Herman C. Schreiber, 97, a lifelong resident of Wingdale, New York, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 11, 2024, at The Grand in Pawling, NY.


Born on June 2, 1926, in Wingdale, NY, he was the son of the late Oscar and Mary (Gutler) Schreiber. Herman proudly served in the 14th Armored Division of the US Army during World War II. After serving his country, he worked for his father’s construction company, Oscar Schreiber and Sons, for many years. He later worked in maintenance at Hunt Country Furniture in Wingdale, NY for 20 years before retiring in 1991.


He was a life member of the American Legion Post #5444 in Wingdale, NY. He was also a regular parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Dover Plains and St. John the Evangelist in Pawling. Herman was a member of the Holmes Whaley Lake Civic Association for 20 years and a volunteer fireman for J.H. Ketcham Hose Co. in Dover Plains, NY.


He was an avid NY Giants and Mets fan, and a lover of all animals, especially his many chihuahuas. However, the most important part of his life was his family.


Herman is survived by his three daughters Susan Twaddell of Holmes, NY; Mary Flood (Edward), of Ellenburg Center, NY; and Judy Ball (Robert) of Pawling, NY; and brother Oscar Schreiber of Wingdale, NY. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.


Herman was predeceased by his wife Doreen (Nickerson) Schreiber; two sons, David and William; two daughters, Bonnie Duncan and Geanine Johnson; and three brothers, John, Fred, and William. He is also predeceased by three sons-in-law, Edward Twaddell, Roger Duncan, and Thomas Johnson; two grandchildren, Kimberly Mirande and Tamara Johnson; one great-grandchild, Nicholas; and his longtime companion, Gloria DeNicolais.


Calling hours will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 18, 2024, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 39 E. Main Street, Pawling, NY. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Charles Cemetery in Dover Plains.
