Lou Gene Edwards

1926-2024

Lou Gene (Whitaker) Edwards, 97, Cameron, died peacefully on March 11, 2024 at the Cameron Nursing Center after battling a brief illness. Born near Cameron, Mrs. Edwards was a lifelong resident of the Cameron community, a place she loved. She graduated from Cameron High School in 1943 and attended Northwest State University in Maryville, MO. On January 1, 1945, she married Harold Edwards. He preceded her in death in 1990.

Mrs. Edwards was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cameron where she was active in the Rainbow Class. She had been employed by the Department of Health and Division of Aging for 22 years, retiring in 1988.

Mrs. Edwards was also preceded in death by her sons, Nicky Lynn and Steven Harold; her foster parents, Hiram and Netta Stinson; her father and mother, Arthur and Mary Whitaker; stepmother, Pauline Whitaker; two brothers, Enos Whitaker and Billy Whitaker; one sister, Joan Hanson; and one stepbrother, Dean Jones.

Survivors include one step sister; Erma Gitthens, Osborn, MO; beloved daughter-in-law, Jan Edwards, Paige, TX; beloved former daughter-in-law, Joyce Edwards, St. Joseph, MO; six grandchildren–including Clint Edwards (Candice) of Cameron, Terri Sallee (Todd), Jill Edwards, Michael Edwards, Jason Edwards, and Nathan Edwards (Aysha); ten great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

Services will be 11:00 AM, Friday March 15, 2024 at Poland-Thompson Funeral Home in Cameron, Missouri. Visitation at 10:00 – 11:00 AM prior to the service. Burial, Cameron Memory Gardens.
