Arlene Gant Devlin Obituary

Arlene Gant Devlin, 87, died at Aspen Hill Rehabilitation Center in Haverhill on Saturday, March 9, 2024.


Arlene Winifred Gant was born on January 12, 1937, in Neptune, New Jersey, the daughter of Raymond Leroy and Evelyn Agnes (Ross) Gant.


She excelled in school and was accepted as part of the early admission program to the University of Chicago when she was just 17. She was active in several social programs. She married Shaun Devlin in 1957. She finished her bachelor's degree in philosophy from Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1959.


Arlene was proud to put herself back on her feet after her divorce in 1973, earning a master’s degree in library science in 1976 and eventually becoming a medical librarian in the VA Hospital System. She retired from the VA Hospital at New Bedford in 2004. She then lived her retirement dream in a small house in Templeton, Massachusetts, where she lived until 18 months before her death. She loved cats, reading, politics, and gardening.


She is survived by her brother Donald Gant and her four daughters, Ellen Devlin, Megan Devlin, Maureen (Mo) Devlin, and Shavaun Devlin, as well as several nieces and nephews.


Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes, Bradford~Haverhill.
