James "Jimmy" Hughes Obituary

James “Jimmy” Hughes, 71, of North Scranton died Monday March 11, 2024 at the Regional Hospital of Scranton following a brief illness.

Born in Scranton he was the son of the late Gerald and Rita Loftus Hughes. A graduate of Scranton Central High School, Class of 1970, he attended Mansfield University and graduated from Marywood College in 1974. Prior to retirement he worked for the City of Scranton at City Hall.

Jimmy was an avid sports fan and he loved to root for the New York Yankees & Notre Dame football. Jimmy was extremely kind to everyone he came across and it was felt by all. You would easily find Jimmy with a broom sweeping the North Scranton Neighborhood he loved and took immense pride living in. Although having to deal with many struggles in his life, Jimmy was a fighter until the end and will be missed by all who knew him.

His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the girls at Neen’s Diner and to Cathy Gavin for all of their kindness and support given to Jimmy over the years.

Surviving are sisters Kathleen Jackson, Moosic, and Mary Murphy and husband Dennis, Taylor; nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by brother-in-law Edward Jackson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 am in Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 316 William St., Scranton. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery.
