Ruth G. Hakey Obituary

Ruth G. (Horton) Hakey, 104, of Rockville, passed away peacefully, at Vernon Manor, on Wednesday, March 6,2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 16, 1920, in Worcester, MA, the daughter of the late Ralza and Martha (Deacon)

Horton.

Ruth lived and went to school in Union, CT. for a short time and then moved back to Worcester and graduated from Worcester High School in 1940. After marrying Orrin Hakey on April 8, 1944, they moved to Rockville, where they raised their two boys. Ruth worked at LaPointe Industries for many years.

She was widowed in 1977, moved to Florence Mill Apartments in 1982 and was a resident there until just five months ago. She made many friends, over the years, and was involved in many activities, taking photos at many of them. Ruth loved the water, frequently swam at Henry Park pool and spent two weeks, every summer, with her family, at Brackett's cabins, right near the ocean, in Greenland, NH. She was water skiing in her 60s!

Ruth was a huge fan of the Red Sox and UCONN women's basketball team. She was a member of Union Church in Rockville for over 70 years and served on many committees. She was a member of the Eastern Star for over 70 years and the Burpee Relief Corp. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, she will be sorely missed by her family, friends and church family.

Ruth leaves behind her two sons, Orrin Hakey Jr. and his wife Donna of Hill, NH and Herbert Hakey and his wife Margaret of Rockville. Two grandsons, Brian Hakey and his wife Tina of Southport, NC and Andrew Hakey of Rockville. And two great grandchildren, Joshua and Anna Hakey of Southport, NC. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and extended family members in Vernon, Manchester, Glastonbury and West Hartford.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband Orrin, and three sisters, Edna Howarth, Dorothy LeFrancois, and Myrtie Rydstrom.

A special thanks to the staff at Vernon Manor. And also Carol Clark and Cherie Cianfaglione who helped care for Ruth while she was living at Florence Mill, these past four years.
