Raymonde J Johnson Obituary

Raymonde J. Johnson, 101, of Galloway, NJ died peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2024.

Raymonde was born in Marseille, France on October 3, 1922. The youngest of five siblings, she attended school in Southern France, and as a young woman, her life would be shaped by war. She excelled at English, and proudly served as an interpreter for the Allied forces during the liberation of France from German occupation. Life during World War II was a challenge, and her eldest daughter, Lucette, was born during one of the bombings. But it would also bring her into contact with an American solider from New Jersey - Robert C. Johnson - who would go on to make her a "war bride." They were married in the U.S. in 1946 and a daughter, Susan arrived a year later.

Raymonde was proud of her French heritage and kept in close contact with her relatives in France throughout her life. But she was also very honored to have become a "true American" and was very patriotic and interested in politics, including when her husband served as mayor of Pleasantville. Raymonde also enjoyed sewing and fashion, music and dancing, and driving her Datsun 280ZX. A devoted mother, she took great pleasure in family dinners, whether going out or staying at home, as well as the lives and accomplishments of each of her six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Raymonde was predeceased by her husband, Robert and daughter, Lucette. She is survived by daughter, Susan Johnson Reitmeyer (W. Fred) of Galloway; grandchildren, Michele Wheatley (Bill) of Galloway, Stephen Brown (Beverly) of Summit, NJ, Lynne Reitmeyer Van Daley (Shawn) of Galloway, Robert Reitmeyer (Susan) of Hammonton, NJ, John Reitmeyer (Mai) of Cranford, NJ, and Jennifer Holcombe (Andrew) of Galloway. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Farren McGoldrick (Ryan), Billy Wheatley, Amanda Brown, Bailey Holcombe, Tanner Holcombe, Mary Reitmeyer, Colleen Reitmeyer, and Clay Van Daley.

Thank you to Spring Home at Galloway as well as Grace Hospice. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Absecon Methodist Church Absecon 100 Pitney Road Absecon, NJ 08201
