other labs in the state of Alabama. In later years, Sue was in charge of the
mycology and tuberculosis lab. Sue retired in 1992, after a 27-year career.
Sue and Al enjoyed traveling during their married life, visiting New England, Nova
Scotia, Germany, Amsterdam, Brussels, California, and British Columbia. One of
their favorite destinations was the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, especially during
Christmastime.
In addition to traveling, Sue was an avid reader and enjoyed solving crossword
puzzles. She also loved dogs, especially German Shepherds, and had several during
her lifetime.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 53
years, Alva C. Umphrey, a sister, Charlena Freeman, a niece with whom she was
very close, Ann (David) McDonnell, a nephew, Charles (Cindy) Freeman, 3 great
nieces, 4 great nephews, and 1 great-great niece.
Al would like to thank the many nurses and caregivers who provided excellent care
to Sue over the years. Special thanks to Kristie, Cristi, and Stephanie with Paragon
