Obituary

Janet was born on September 21, 1949, in Russell, Manitoba; the youngest of three children to Kurt and Viola Welke.  She was baptized and later received into full communion at the Christ Lutheran Church of Langenburg.  She was raised on the family farm just east of Langenburg and that’s where her love for farming began.

On October 30, 1965, she married Alvin Popowich in Langenburg.  Shortly thereafter they bought a farm east of Churchbridge where their three children were born, Shannon, Corey, and Tanis.  It was during these years where their passion for horses began; most weekends were spent showing & barrel racing horses.

In 1973 they moved to the farm Northeast of Langenburg where they expanded the family to include cattle, chickens, and all sorts of farmyard friends.

Horses were one of Janet’s main hobbies, as well as raising cattle and grain farming.  Despite being a busy farmer’s wife, Janet always found the time to enjoy several activities and interests, including gardening, and maintaining a beautiful farmyard. She especially enjoyed her time with her grandchildren, cheering them on and very seldom missing a hockey game or dance recital.  Janet also believed that every farm needed a dog so she made sure to always have the biggest Saint Bernard they could find.

Janet’s smile and infectious laugh was like a breath of fresh air that would light up the room wherever she went.  She always put a smile on everyone’s face and especially loved to cook, making sure no one left her house hungry.

Janet was predeceased by her husband Alvin and parents Kurt and Viola.  She is survived by her daughter, Shannon; son, Corey (Trina); daughter, Tanis (Steve); and grandchildren, Alex, and Chloe (Devon).  Janet is also survived by her sisters, Lois and Gloria, her sister-in laws, Arlene, and Laverne as well as many nieces and nephews.

We are genuinely thankful to everyone who spent the time to talk and visit with Janet during her stay at the care home. We would especially like to thank Pastor Mauricio for being available for the family, Braendle-Bruce for their support and especially the staff of the Centennial Special Care Home in Langenburg for the care they provided Janet during her time there. She will be loved and missed by all.

If desired, memorial donations in memory of Janet may be made to the Centennial Special Care Home.
