Obituary

CHRISTINE (Cakounes) Nicholaou of Dracut Massachusetts passed away on February 20, 2024 at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Nicholas P. Nicholaou and the daughter of the late Nicholas G. and Eleni (Zouzoulas) Cakounes. She was the sister of the late George Cakounes and Jeannie (Cakounes) Smith. Christine was born in Greece and immigrated to the United Stated with her father and four siblings on April 14, 1947, where she was a resident of Dracut, Massachusetts for 77 years. She married Nicholas on August 26, 1951 and raised three children. She was a member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church and the Transfiguration Philoptochos Society.

There was nothing more important to our mother than her family. She devoted her life to her family, often stating that “her children are my life”. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, friend and a true gift to the world. She would often say “I am just a house wife” but she was so much more than that. She thoroughly enjoyed being outside the most tending to her yard. There was nothing Christine could not do, and up until last summer was still able to go out and do some light yard work. She was an excellent cook – everything she made was to perfection! That is because she cooked from her heart and did it purely for love for her family. Christine was one of the most humble and selfless people you would ever meet. She always did for others, never herself, and also devoted her time to take care of many family members in their time of need. She had a smile that could light up a room – everyone she met loved her – and she danced Greek beautifully and with such joy. She was such a beautiful soul, the consummate peacemaker, the ultimate caregiver, and always selfless in everything that she did.

Christine leaves behind her three children – Elaine Miscovitch and son-in-law Rex, George Nicholaou and daughter-in-law Nora, and Evanthea (Thea) Nicholaou-Anderson. She also leaves behind her three grandchildren – Kristofer and Alex Anderson, and Angelique Mercier. She is also survived by her brother Peter and sister-in-law Sophia Cakounes, her brother Theodore Cakounes, and numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren, and two great grandchildren.

The wake will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Father John Sarantos Way in Lowell MA, from 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM, immediately followed by the funeral at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at the Westlawn Cemetery in Lowell, MA.

In lieu of flowers, Christine’s wishes were to have donations made to the Transfiguration Church Kitchen Fund.

The family would like to thank Danielle Murphy, RN, from Tufts Medicine Care At Home for all her kindness and support and caring for Christine.

Christine has left a hole in our lives, but will forever be carried in our hearts.
