Obituary

Genevieve Strickland

August 5th, 1941 - February 17th, 2024

The family of Genevieve Strickland is saddened to announce her passing on February 17 at James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander, at the age of 82.

Genevieve is predeceased by her husband Howard Strickland, parents Samuel and Laura Geange, brother Alexander Geange, and sister-in-law Agnus Geange.

Left to mourn with loving memories is her companion, Albert Ferreira; sons Dale (Joan), Craig (Tracy), and Terry (Jennifer); grandchildren Caroline, Julia, Eason, Claire, and Charlotte; twin brother Maurice (Winnie); brother William; sister Hilda; sister-in-law Brenda; as well as a large number of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Gen was born in Glovertown and at an early age, moved to Armyside in Gander where she grew up and eventually met her husband, Howard. They then moved to Carbonear and raised their family of three boys. Gen was diagnosed with breast cancer at an early age but fought hard to beat it. This fight continued after her recovery as she took a leading role in developing the Cancer Support Group in Carbonear. She was also actively involved with youth activities in Carbonear through her involvement in Pathfinders and Curling. Gen’s commitment to the community was later recognized as she was nominated for citizen of the year in Carbonear. Upon retirement, Gen and Howard returned to Central NL where she became a member of the Glenwood chapter of WI and continued her work with the local Cancer Support Group. After Howard’s passing, Gen entered a new phase in her life where she spent her winters in Florida. There she met Al, and they became great companions spending their time touring the US. They had many wonderful adventures together, and especially enjoyed their time at Linger Lake in Tennessee. Gen became endeared and welcomed into Al’s family and she’ll be sorely missed by them as well. In her later years, Gen took up painting and especially rock painting, and from then on, no flat rock in Central NL was safe.

Gen was probably best known for her love for her family. Her relationship with her siblings, children and grandchildren were of the utmost importance to her. Gen was the most loving and caring person you could ever wish to know and will be missed by all that knew her.

The family would like to thank everyone for their support in this difficult time and for the support of Gen over the last few months as she battled illness, from the ongoing care of Dr. Abdulmajeed to the patience of the staff at Lawton’s Drugs. And a special thank you to her home care worker Debbie Moore who went above and beyond on a daily basis to give Gen as much care and comfort as possible.

Family will be receiving friends at Stacey’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 20th, 2024 from 2pm – 4pm, and from 7pm – 9pm. Funeral service will take place at Fraser Road United Church on Wednesday, February 21st, 2024 at 1:00 pm with interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery.
