Joanne Maureen Barnhart, 80, of Gaithersburg (Damascus) MD, died peacefully on February 7, 2024.

Born March 16, 1943, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Joanne was the oldest of three children born to Joseph and Joyce Smith. Joanne attended St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Trenton, New Jersey and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After graduating, she worked as a registered nurse in the Pittsburgh area.

She married Andrew Barnhart in 1976 and had one child, Gregory. They enjoyed many years traveling, attending operas, and exploring the country.

Joanne was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Damascus travel club, and Damascus garden club. She also volunteered at Damascus Heritage Society Museum. She was a longtime member of Saint Paul Catholic Church in Damascus, Maryland.

When Joanne wasn’t traveling the country by bus, she could be found laughing and enjoying burger night with her fiercely loyal and supportive girlfriends.

Joanne is survived by her son Gregory (Rebecca); her siblings Susanne Seeber (Joseph) and Patrick Smith (Tina); her step-daughter Cynthia Gallaher; and her grandchildren Danielle, Michelle, Christopher, Douglas, Matthew, and Felix.

Family will receive friends on Monday, February 19, 2024, from 2 to 4 pm at Molesworth-Williams, P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, MD 20872. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at 11 am at Saint Paul Catholic Church, 9250 W Damascus Road, Damascus, MD. 20872.  Burial will follow at All Souls Cemetery, Germantown, MD.
