Michael E. Smith Obituary

Michael E. Smith, 73, of Grafton, MA passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 8, 2024 after a long illness with Parkinson’s Disease. Michael spent his last days surrounded by family and is survived by his wife Nancy (Lombardo) of 44 years; his children, Lauren Smith, Rachel Collette and her husband Matt, Stephen Smith and his wife Molly; and two grandchildren, Riley Smith and Tyler Collette.

Born in New Brunswick, Canada, he was the son of the late L. Aubrey and Mae (Dionne) Smith. Growing up in Winslow, Maine, Michael enjoyed the many events of a large family and involvements in the active St. John the Baptist Church and Scott Paper mill community. He later attended Bridgton Academy, Maine Maritime Academy, and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono. After receiving his degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Michael moved to Massachusetts where he began his career and established his friendships and family life. In his career as a Sales Engineer, he thoroughly enjoyed the many years of visiting clients and building relationships while working with Goulds Pumps, Hayes Pumps, and Brierly Lombard.

Michael loved people, conversations, and all opportunities to gather. Fond memories of him involve parties, outings, backyard barbecues, and family reunions. He was known for his ability to strike up a conversation in any situation. Throughout his life, Michael enjoyed the outdoors – whether in his own backyard, adventures as a boy scout, or on camping trips throughout the northeast as an adult. Living in Massachusetts Michael formed many lasting friendships and enjoyed being involved in the community through St. James Church, Boy Scouts, many activities with his children. His children remember him for prioritizing his time with family, baking cookies and cakes in the kitchen, regularly attending school functions and sporting events, happily being their chauffeur, and so much more. His smile and positive outlook will be missed by many.

Michael is also survived by his loving siblings: Robert Smith (Anne), Judith Daviau (John Brochu), Anne Sinclair (David), Margaret Chin (Thomas), Peter Smith, John Smith, Joseph Smith, James Smith, and David Smith (Alicia) along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended families.
