Dr. Mitchell Myers

Dr. Mitchell Dean Myers, a lifetime resident of Checotah, Oklahoma was called to heaven on January 31, 2024. Mitch was born Sep 2, 1952, to LaVada Jane & Lloyd Dean Myers in Muskogee, OK. Mitch graduated Checotah High School in 1970 and attended the University of Oklahoma where he majored in Biological Sciences and played in the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band, graduating in 1975. Mitch went on to attend and graduate from the University of Oklahoma Dental School in 1979 and established his dental practice in Checotah in July of 1979. Dr. Myers and his wife Karen were wed July 24, 1987. Together they had their first child, daughter Allyson Nicole on May 2, 1989, and twin sons Zachary Mitchell and Tyler Martin on March 11, 1991. Dr. Myers served his community as a dentist for nearly 38 years, eventually retiring in 2017. Going into part time retirement from his dental practice, Mitch began teaching physics & chemistry at Checotah High School. He enjoyed seeing kids succeed in the classroom and in sports. During his time teaching, he loved to tell his close friends and family all about the students and athletes Checotah had and where they were hoping to attend college. Mitch was a loyal individual to his Checotah Community and thoroughly enjoyed being involved. In his younger years he refereed middle school basketball games, lead both adult’s & children’s choir at the First Baptist Church. Every year you could find him volunteering with friends at community events such as Okrafest, Old Settlers Day, Trash Day, and Honey Springs & Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfasts. Running the clocks for both Checotah football and later on Checotah basketball, was always one of Mitch's favorite things to do. Mitch served as the president of the Checotah Foundation for Academic Excellence, president of the Lion’s Club, and was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Main Street. He appreciated the time he had of getting together with his dental school buddies for study club for continuing education & was a member of the Oklahoma Dental Association. For those who knew Dr. Myers, knew he was a diehard Oklahoma Sooners fan and attended Oklahoma sporting events for over 30 years with his family. Dr. Myers was preceded in death by his father Lloyd Myers. He is survived by wife Karen of the home, Mother Lavada Myers, of Checotah, Children Allyson Twiss and her husband Bryan of Richardson, Texas, Zach and wife Jayme of Checotah and two grandchildren Jones and Merritt, and Tyler and wife Aubrielle of Broken Arrow, and two grandchildren Rhett and Jensen. Dr. Myers will be remembered as a man who loved his family, the community of Checotah, and the many friendships he had over the years living in Checotah. He and his family are very thankful for those who helped him during the later years of his life attend sporting events, Saturday morning coffee shop talks, and checked in on him and Karen from time to time.

Viewing for Dr. Mitch Myers will be 12PM to 6PM Thursday, February 8, 2024, with his family receiving friends from 4PM to 6PM. Viewing will also be from 9AM to 12 PM Friday, February 9, 2024, all at Garrett Family Funeral Home of Checotah.

Services celebrating the life of Dr. Mitch Myers will be held 11:00 am Saturday, February 10, 2024, in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Checotah with Reverend Steve Dennis, Mr. Larry Bookout and Mr. Matt Vandiver, ministering. Larry Bookout, Jeremiah Warrior, Robert Jennings, Marvin Lacy, Martin Mitchell, Dee Sisson, Dr. Mick Meador, Matt Vandiver, Dr. Jack Sheets, Wayne Williams and Dr. Chris Carey will serve as Honorary Casket Bearers.
