Arthur W. Pettengill

<p>Augusta – Arthur W. Pettengill, 83, of Wayne, passed away Monday, January 29th, 2024, at Maine General in Augusta. He was born in Winthrop June 1, 1940, the son of Clarence and Gladys (Randall) Pettengill, just minutes after his twin brother Alfred and the tenth of eleven children.</p><p><br></p><p>Arthur attended school in Winthrop and on May 29th, 1960, married his childhood sweetheart, Dorothy Raymond. Together they had three children and 26 years together before her passing in 1986. Years later he married again, this time to Annette Bachelder. He and Annette shared seven years together before she, too, passed. </p><p><br></p><p>Arthur worked many places, including the Hudson Farm in Winthrop, Inmont, Winthrop Iron Works, and also as a skilled carpenter. In the 1970's he was the owner of Art's Citgo in Winthrop and for many, many years he sold fishing bait, first in Winthrop and then in Wayne. </p><p><br></p><p>Arthur was very passionate when it came to bait fishing. He looked forward to the next season as soon as the current one was finished. He enjoyed visiting with everyone that visited his little shop and always made sure they got a few more than they asked for.</p><p><br></p><p>Arthur enjoyed brook fishing, clamming, and gardening, but most of all he loved his family. He enjoyed keeping up with his sister Susie on the phone each week and loved playing jokes on his sister Mildred. He was always checking in with various members of his family to see how they were doing and if they needed anything. He made sure to share his clams with his brother Alfred.</p><p><br></p><p>Arthur had the greatest love imaginable for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved ice fishing with Laura and Todd when they were younger. He always made sure Alicia and Sarah made it off the bus and home safely from school. Whenever they came to visit, he would offer them food a dozen times and then try to give them his last few dollars on the way out the door. He never wanted them to go without. In recent years, Arthur enjoyed morning calls and sing-alongs from his great-granddaughter Charlotte and the time spent with his great-granddaughter Eleanor. He thoroughly enjoyed the smelts that she brought him for dinner. They were the loves of his life and his pride and joy. </p><p><br></p><p>In addition to his parents, Arthur is predeceased by his wives Dorothy and Annette; his sons Thomas Pettengill and John Pettengill; his brothers Clarence "Sonny" Pettengill, Herbert Pettengill, Ernest Pettengill, and George "Butch" Pettengill; his sisters Elizabeth Williams, Permelia Ridley, Mildred Dyer, and Susie Crystal. </p><p><br></p><p>Arthur is survived by his daughter Tammy Gibbons and her husband Doug of Fairfield; his grandchildren Todd Gibbons of Fairfield, Laura Manchester and her husband Curt of South Paris, Alicia Dagneau of Arizona, and Sarah Pettengill of Winthrop; great-grandchildren Charlotte Manchester, Eleanor Turner, Jacie Dagneau, and Emelia Pettengill; his brother Alfred Pettengill, his sister Dorothy Blake, as well as several nieces and nephews.
