Henry S. Hamm Obituary

Henry Stevens Hamm, Jr. (age 93) passed away on January 5, 2024.

Henry was a native of Dover, Delaware, a 1949 graduate of Dover High School and a graduate of Wesley College.  He was the youngest child of Henry Stevens Hamm and his wife, Nina, who with his five older sisters as well as extended family members lived along State Street.

He served the Army at Fort McClellan, Alabama, as part of the Military Police Corps in the mid-1950s.  As a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) electronics technician, he and his wife, Kathleen, were assigned to Anchorage, Alaska where they survived the 1964 Good Friday earthquake simply due to luck as they were at home ill when their places of employment were destroyed. When stationed on Lake Iliamna, the couple learned to supplement the weekly supply plane deliveries by canning salmon and hunting moose.  In the late 1960s, FAA transferred Henry to the Washington DC area where the family purchased a farm and became active in the local community, including Clarksburg United Methodist Church, 4-H, Farm Bureau, and Angus Association.  Henry was a strong supporter of agriculture and was known for his love of Black Angus cattle, horses, and pets. Once retired from FAA, he supported USDA agricultural surveys, loved exploring and learning through traveling, participated in Poolesville Odd Fellows Lodge, and supported his children & grandchildren’s numerous activities.  As a widower, he spent his final years enjoying the music, bingo, and events of Homewood at Frederick.

Henry is survived by his four children - Melinda Simpkins, Roderick Hamm, Sonia Wiley, and Heather Hamm - and their families which includes 9 grandchildren plus great-grandchildren. His sister, Anna Sadowski, resides in Oak Park, Il.

A celebration of life will be held March 16, 2024, 1pm, at Clarksburg United Methodist Church, 23425 Spire St, Clarksburg, MD 20871.  In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the church.
