Dean Otis Dunn Obituary

Dean O. Dunn, 93, of Merrill, Iowa, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024, at Unity Point Health in Sioux City, Iowa. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa. Rev. Christian Meier will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the service on Wednesday.


Dean O. Dunn was born on May 8, 1930, in West Bend, Iowa, the son of Joseph H. and Viola (Broadwell) Dunn. He graduated from West Bend High School and then began farming along with raising sheep, hogs and cattle.


On March 23, 1952, Dean and Dorothy Stief were united in marriage at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa. In 1961, Dean and Dorothy moved to a farm near Merrill, Iowa where they raised their two children, Jayne and Jay. Along with farming, Dean worked as a crop adjuster for Mark Crop Insurance and the Plymouth County FSA office. He also sold seed corn and soybeans for Pioneer, Stine and Garst.


Dean was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he ushered. His life centered around his family. Dean enjoyed numerous trips with his family to Branson, Missouri.


Grateful to have shared his life are his children and their spouses, Jayne and John Willer of Merrill, IA; Jay and Vickie Dunn of Merrill, IA; grandchildren, Megan (Tyler) Schurman of Omaha, NE, Brianna (Fiancé, Kyle Schultz) Dunn of Spencer, IA and Kyle (Friend, Ashley Hogendorn) Dunn of Omaha, NE; great-grandchildren, Brantley and Kara Schultz; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Dunn of Algona, IA; a sister, Lois Hatton of Lawrence, KS; and nieces, nephews and cousins.


He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Dorothy on May 4, 2018; an infant daughter, Joy Margaret Dunn; a brother Wayne Dunn; a brother-in-law, Tom Hatton; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rev. Harry F. and LaVonne Stief.
