Waukomis Lewis Obituary

Waukomis “Wauky” Louise Lewis, a trailblazer and cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2024, in Claremore, Oklahoma. Born on July 16, 1938, Wauky’s life was a testament to her enduring spirit and her dedication to her family, her community, and her profession. Wauky was a proud Muscogee and Seminole woman who belonged to the Sweet Potato Clan and whose tribal town was Tvkapace.

The daughter of the late Rev. Lee Chupco and Helen Chupco (née Palmer), Wauky was a woman of many firsts. She made history as the first Native American woman to graduate from the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing. Her passion for healing led her to a distinguished 30-year career at the Claremore Indian Hospital, where she served with compassion and excellence.

Wauky's professional achievements were groundbreaking. She became the first Native American nurse in the Oklahoma City Area Indian Health Service to join the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, attaining the rank of Commander. Her dedication to service was further exemplified as an appointed member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Indian Health Board. Her selflessness shone brightly as she volunteered to serve two months in Kuwait following Desert Storm, providing care to refugees. Her extraordinary contributions were recognized with a Southwest Asia Service Medal, among numerous other accolades.

Though her professional life was remarkable, Wauky's heart was always with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son Michael Lewis, and her brother James Chupco and his wife. Her legacy lives on through her surviving son, Gary Lewis and Rose Gallaher; her daughter, Sandra Lewis; her cherished grandchildren, Amanda and Rowdy Merritt, Joey Burrow, Chebon Lewis, Paul Hughes, and Summer Lewis and Chris Boyajian; and her eight great-grandchildren, who will forever hold her memory dear.

Wauky's interests brought joy to her life. She adored spending time with her cat, Kitty, and relished moments with her family. An avid fan of University of Oklahoma sports, she found pleasure in cheering on all Sooner sports. Her adventurous spirit was fulfilled through travels with friends, exploring new places and creating lasting memories.

Described by those who knew her as loving, kind, and spirited, Wauky's impact on the world was profound. Her warm presence and unwavering kindness touched many lives. She leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and an indomitable spirit that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Wauky will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her life was a beacon of hope and strength, and her memory will be cherished forever.
