Obituary

Charles Derwood Mahan passed away peacefully on January 21, 2024, at the age of 85. He was born in Nixon, Texas on October 26, 1938, to Derwood and Lethe Mahan.

After graduating from Nixon High School in 1957, he attended Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos, Texas and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 1964. He then moved back to Nixon, and worked several years at the Nixon ISD Tax Office until ranching and raising cattle became his lifelong career.

Charles was a hard-working man his entire life, and ranching allowed him the time to also enjoy life with his family and friends at his leisure. Deer hunts in West Texas, bird hunts in South Texas, trail rides, and yearly trips to Concan were among his favorites. Later in life he was blessed with two grandchildren and devoted much of his time to being present at their many activities. He also enjoyed many days of comfort and companionship with Jodie’s dogs, Brayden and Bailey, and the annual Mahan Concan trip became something not to be missed.

Charles is survived by his two daughters Sammie Veit and her husband Mark, and Jodie Mahan; grandchildren Chelsea Garrett and her husband Cody, and Garrett Veit; brother Harold Mahan and his wife Florence Ruth Mahan; nephew John Mahan and his wife Kelly, and niece Laura Pyle and her husband Jared; great nephews and niece Chandler and Corbin Mahan, and Grant and Logan Townsend.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother JB Mahan.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Advanced Home Health and Guadalupe Regional Hospice Services who gave such loving care to our Dad. We would also like to thank the many wonderful family and friends for their love and support who came by to visit, brought food, and called.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 26, 2024, at 9:00 am at Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon, Texas, with a service to follow at 10:00am with Pastor Terry Davis officiating. Interment will be at Nixon Cemetery.
