William "Bill" Joseph McCracken Sr

<p>William Joseph McCracken, Sr., 88, was born on May 16, 1935, in Wichita, Kansas to Josephine McCracken and Fred Smith.</p><p><br></p><p>He and his mother moved to Parsons, Kansas when he was still young. He attended and graduated from Douglass School. At the age of 17, he served two years in the United States Air Force. After an honorable discharge, he worked for several years at the KD Railroad in Parsons.</p><p><br></p><p>On August 19th, 1967 William married Frances Hickerson in Parsons, Kansas. Seven children joined this union.</p><p><br></p><p>While visiting his father-in-law in Topeka he put in an application with the Housing Authority where he was hired. He moved his family to Topeka where he became known as “Pine Ridge Bill”. After working there for several years, he worked a variety of jobs: Frito Lay, Menninger Foundation, and VA Hospital. He retired at the age of 62 from USD 501 and the State of Kansas.</p><p><br></p><p>Bill was a hardworking family man. He was very prideful of his accomplishments in life. His knowledge and advice were priceless to those who benefitted from it. He was loved dearly by his family and community. He enjoyed going to local events and family gatherings.</p><p><br></p><p>Bill is preceded by his beloved wife, Frances R. McCracken, mother, Josephine Manier and brother, Alvin E. Young.</p><p><br></p><p>Left to cherish his memories are his children: Ernest Hickerson, Topeka, KS; Bobby Hickerson (Geri), Arlington, TX; Eddie Dixon, Parsons, KS; Lorenzo Hickerson, ATL, GA; Seressa Opoku, Topeka, KS; William Dixon, Parsons, KS; William McCracken, Jr., Topeka, KS; Richard Dixon, Tulsa, OK and Eric McCracken, Topeka, KS., 34 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and a host of other family members.</p><p><br></p>
