Shirley Boutin Renwick Obituary

Shirley Boutin Renwick, age 90, of Mason, Michigan, passed away suddenly due to cardiac arrest at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. Shirley was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on December 6, 1933, the daughter of Pierce and Evelyn (Busch) Boutin, who have preceded her in death. She grew up near Detroit in Drayton Plains and then Pontiac, Michigan. Shirley graduated from Pontiac High School and attended one year at Michigan State University. She married her high school sweetheart, Chuck Renwick, and they were loving parents to their 3 children: Mike, Robin and Dan. During their 25 years of marriage, they lived in Michigan, Ohio, and New Jersey before they parted amicably and went their separate ways.

Shirley spent her career working for the YWCA and retired in 1990 as the Executive Director of the YWCA in Westfield, New Jersey. She then moved to Mason in 1990 with her dear friend, Mary Hagen, and deeply loved being part of the Mason Community. Shirley was a long-time volunteer at the Mason Area Historical Society, serving as treasurer and helping to organize many programs and fund-raising events, particularly the garden and home tours. Being a talented artist specializing in watercolor painting and needlework, she also belonged to the Mason Area Art Guild for many years and was instrumental in arranging numerous art shows and projects around town. Shirley was a Master Gardener and an avid reader. She enjoyed music, especially classical music, and playing the piano. Shirley was a Spartan for life, being a season ticket holder for many years for the MSU Women’s Basketball games. She also supported the Ingham County Animal Shelter and was loving “mom” to many dogs and cats over the years, most recently Adam and Minnie.

Shirley will be remembered as being a warm and caring person who was also pragmatic and feisty. She had a very bright and curious intellect and keen sense of humor.

Along with her parents, Shirley is preceded in death by her beloved friend and companion, Mary Hagen. She is survived by her children: Mike (Dusty) Renwick, Robin (Scott) Piper, and Daniel (Laurie) Renwick; grandchildren: Larissa (Will) Knies, Cody (Jordan) Renwick, Collin Renwick Piper, Melissa (Eric) Craig, and Branden Sawyer; 8 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. Shirley is also survived by her siblings, Carol (Bill) Hayward and John (Susan) Boutin; a large extended family; numerous dear friends in the community; and the loving caregivers at the Craft Care Home.

There are no services planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to either the Mason Area Historical Society, PO Box 44, Mason, MI 48854; the Ingham County Animal Shelter Fund, P.O.
