Daniel John Hasselberger Obituary

Daniel John Hasselberger, born on November 22, 1997, in Danbury, passed away due to a sudden unexpected illness on January 12, 2024, at Danbury Hospital. Daniel was the beloved son of John and Julie Hasselberger, of Sandy Hook. Daniel was born with a rare condition called Polymicrogyria which resulted in severe life altering disabilities. Despite his difficulties, Daniel had a sparkle and magic in him that melted hearts. He was non-verbal but he spoke in his actions and expressions. He touched the lives and hearts of all who met him. His bright eyes and infectious giggles were so joyful.

Daniel attended the Project Succeed Special Needs Program in Danbury, CT, the STAR Special Needs Program at Reed Intermediate School in Newtown, CT and graduated from Newtown High School, Sandy Hook, CT. He always approached life with a sense of wonder. He was very visually acute and enjoyed taking the world in through his eyes. He loved being outside, watching the trees, listening to wind chimes and going for walks. Daniel also loved music, calming lights, tactile projects, painting with his Mom, going to the movies, swimming, and taking rides in his wheelchair van. Daniel was part of the special needs’ ministry at Walnut Hill Community Church, and the FUN group (Families United in Newtown).

Daniel is survived by his mother, Julie Hasselberger; his father, John Hasselberger; his sister, Sarah Hasselberger and her fiancée Tyler Smith and their son Harrison Smith; his brother, Thomas Hasselberger his grandfather, Curtis Polk; and his grandmother, Beverly Hasselberger. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Janice Polk; his grandfather, William Hasselberger; and his uncle, Robert Hasselberger. Daniel was loved and cherished by his many aunts, uncles, cousins, nurses, therapists, aids, teachers, caseworkers, and friends.
