Ruth E. Hobbs Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Ruth Ellen Hobbs, Damascus, Maryland on January 9, 2024. She was the beloved wife of Donald Ray Hobbs, Jr. (Donnie) for 66 years.

     Born on June 15, 1937, in Woodfield, Maryland, Ruth was the daughter of Doris (Stanley) Burdette and Perry Burdette. After graduating from Damascus High School, she entered the work force for the Civil Service. She returned to work after raising her family. She retired from Montgomery County Public Schools after 25 years as a school secretary.

     Ruth was known for her infectious smile and joy she brought to others. She loved gardening, especially working with her flowers. She enjoyed cooking, family beach vacations, and spending time with her friends and extended family. She attended all her children’s activities, athletic games, concerts, parades, and 4-H livestock shows. She loved the town of Damascus and was visible in most all facets of the community.

     Ruth was a life-long member of the Wesley Grove United Methodist Church. She loved her church family, the services, and the fellowship.

     Ruth is survived by her loving husband Donnie, daughters, Lori Stiles (Chris), Lana Witiak (Ray), and son, Ray Hobbs (Michelle); grandchildren, Devin, Taylor, Rowdy, Bradley, and Danielle; brother, John Burdette; and aunt, Phyllis Walker as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins, and loyal friends.

     Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Barbara Burdette, and Rosemary Friend.

     The family will receive friends on Monday, January 22, from 10:30 am – 12 noon at Montgomery United Methodist Church, 28325 Kemptown Road, Damascus, Maryland. Funeral services will begin, 12:00 noon at the church.  A private burial will follow in Wesley Grove Methodist Cemetery.
