JOHN GARTH MAXSON Obituary

A funeral service for John Garth Maxson, 82, will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 13, 2024 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wheatland, Wyoming with The Reverend Lincoln C. Winter officiating.  Interment was held in the Wheatland Cemetery.

The Lord came for John on Thursday, December 21, 2023 in Wheatland after fighting an illness from Camp Lejeune water contamination for ten years.

John was born on Thursday, August 14, 1941 in Delano, California the son of Donald Martin and Frances Eola (Wilson) Maxson.

John was reared and educated in Delano until about the age of 14 when the family moved to Mount Vernon, Iowa to run the family farm.  He graduated high school from Mount Vernon High School.  After graduation he went to the United States Marine Corps.  He was honorably discharged. In June of 1966, he became an iron worker for Local #10. He then traveled for his local and in 1979, he joined the Casper, Wyoming local #454 and in 1982, he joined the Wheatland IBEW local #612.

He met Marilyn Stepanek in 1974, while he was building a bank in Lincoln, Nebraska, and they traveled with his ironwork. They bought a home in Wheatland where they continued to live. He fell in love with Wheatland and Wyoming. John owned a gun shop, welding shop, carpentry shop, and did some metal work. In his carpentry work, John was always teaching and mentoring others. John went to work for Basin Electric on January 11, 1981, where he retired from.  

He enjoyed taking his family camping, fishing, hunting, and going to their family cabin. 

He was very competitive with his racquetball, the younger the opponent the harder he played and won!

John is survived by his wife, Marilyn Maxson of Wheatland; sister, Jane Penfield of Cedar Rapids; brother, Jim (Carrie) Maxson of Cedar Rapids, nephew, Dillon Maxson of Cedar Rapids, brother-in-law, Leonard (Elaine) Stepanek; and several nieces and nephews and extended family in Wyoming.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Maxson on April 12, 2001 and mother, Frances Eola Maxson on August 20, 2003.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Chase Procter, John Atterbury, Bill Gorman, Dan Stepanek, Jeff Billing, Jim Maxson, Gary Stepanek, David Stepanek, Virgil Downing, and all his friends.

A memorial to the Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 216, Wheatland, Wyoming 82201 or to the Laramie Peak VFW Post #3558, 1401 Ninth Street, Wheatland, Wyoming 82201 would be appreciated by the family.
