Yvonne Lorraine MacLean Obituary

Yvonne Lorraine (Young) MacLean

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, who completed her life's journey on January 1, 2024, at the age of 94, peacefully passing away at the QEII Infirmary.

Born in Mill Cove on July 23, 1929, daughter of the late William and Madge (Murphy) Young, mom lived her life in Hubbards from the age of 18 when she married her husband, Seeley, a handsome World War II veteran.

Mom worked hard all her life, both inside and outside her home. She started working at a very young age for her Uncle and Aunt in Northwest Cove, working at Associated Seafoods (the Cannery) in Fox Point from 1945 to1947, then at the Margarine Factory in Hubbards from 1947 to 1948. She was a Baker for Scotty's Canteen in Hubbards where the MacKenzie Line bus stopped twice a day. Mom worked for Hubbards Medical Centre for 26 years for Doctors L.B. Slipp and P.A. Cole.

Mom also worked on and off over the years for CFB Mill Cove, when it was a striving Naval Base.

Mom was one of the eldest people in Hubbards, a true historian with great knowledge, up until the day of her passing.

Mom was a member of Grandma's Knee Rug Hooking Museum. She was also featured in a rug hooking book written by Judy Taylor entitled “Joy of Hooking”. Mom was a great rug hooker and taught many people over the years the art of rug hooking. She also braided mats spending many hours hand cutting wool coats from which both her braided and hooked rugs were created. She was also an accomplished quilter. Her work can be found proudly displayed in many homes. Mom was a member of the St. Mark's Anglican Church, Mill Cove.

Mom is well known for her great cooking, baking and preserving skills, always sharing her goodies with friends, family and neighbours. If anyone was sick you could count on receiving a pot of homemade soup and a loaf of fresh baked bread or rolls.

There was never a dull moment at mom's house with many friends and family stopping by for a visit, game of crib and a cup of tea/coffee along with something to eat. Her house was full of love and laughter. Her character was one of quiet strength, compassion, kindness, generosity and wit.

Mom loved the outdoors and walked daily until her mid 80's. She was an avid gardener growing her own vegetables, using them to make preserves. Her home property was surrounded by beautiful flowers and shrubs where many people received beautiful bouquets. She loved picking blueberries, strawberries, scouting for Mayflowers and, the beach, where many memories were made.

She is survived by her sons Allen (Muriel) Hubbards, Peter (Patricia) Dartmouth and daughter Madge, Halifax. Grandchildren Christopher, Jessica (Ryan), Alexandria (Rob), Jeffrey (Kelsey) and Allison; Great Grandchildren Kaleb, Seeley and Cruz. Sisters Barbara, Barss Corner, NS and Edna, Caledon, Ont., as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her husband Seeley, brother Bruce, sister Claudine, granddaughter Amanda and great granddaughter Victoria.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all who have reached out to both mom and her family during her time in the hospital and special thank you to nurses Thaila and Cassidy of 6.2.

In honouring mom's wishes, there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards.

A private graveside service will be held at Pinehill Cemetery, Hubbards, at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The War Amps or charity of your choice. Online condolences can be made to www.rawalker.ca
