Obituary

Carman Henry Westhaver

87, Westfield, passed away December 15, 2023. Born in Fox Point, he was a son of the late Charles and Susan (Coolen) Westhaver.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Phyllis (Armsworthy), Fox Point; sons Spencer (Mona), Kevin (Cathy), both of Fox Point; daughters Debbie McArthur (Edd), Brandon & Paula Barclay (Richard), Mahone Bay; Brother Russell (Maureen), Shoreham Village, Chester; many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.

He was predeceased by brother Clayton (Mike); sons Kenneth (Sally), Michael (Suzette); Grandson Adam Coolen and former companion Sandra McNeil.

Dad was a member of the Longshoremen’s Association having worked as a Stevedore in his early years and ended his work career as a Fisherman. Dad had a green thumb and loved gardening. Whether it be vegetables or flowers, in summer, our homestead in Fox Point always adorned the most beautiful dahlia garden beds and his veggie garden was the envy of our neighborhood. He loved to share the bounties of his labor with our neighbors. Dad loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter never missing an opportunity to hunt deer. He enjoyed time at the camp with the boys. Many a good meal was cooked by Dad and shared along with endless games of cribbage, cards, and lots of shenanigans. Dad enjoyed feeding the birds at his home in Westfield. The birds were so tame and comfortable around him, they would eat out of his hand. It was no secret that Dad enjoyed listening to country music. He loved going to yard sales and collecting old country classic LP’s. Country music blissfully filled his home and his heart. Whether you were visiting with Dad or chatting with him on the phone he needed to be reminded to turn the volume down so we could have a conversation. His collection of LP’s imploded to a point where he soon would have had to add an extension on his home to display them.

Before Dad’s stroke in 2021 he enjoyed outings such as local variety shows, card games and yard sales. His mobility was affected by the stroke, but it didn’t keep him idle. He did a long stretch in hospital and returned home with in-home care assistance. He was able to live in his home until his death which is what he wanted. Thank you to Queens Co Home Care workers.

Dad died with his loving companion, Iona Charlton, by his side. It comforts us to know that he didn’t die alone.

In keeping with Dad’s wishes, he was cremated.

His children will receive visitors from 4-6pm on January 12th, 2024 in the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Homes, Hubbards. We will be sharing memories collectively @ 5pm. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
