Matthew J. "Sonny" O'Brien Jr., 88 years of age, of Rochester New York, passed away on December 26th, 2023.

Matthew (Matt) was born on February 24, 1935 to his parents Louise and Matthew J. Sr. Matt worked for Gleason Works in Rochester for 44 years - working himself up from a starting position in the mail room to becoming a well respected purchaser for Gleason Works. His position at Gleason gave him opportunities to travel to Europe, working in Belgium for an extended period of time. He loved his time there.

Matt enjoyed many activities over his lifetime. Matt was an avid skier and organized many trips across the US, Candata and Austria for his groups of friends. Matt enjoyed golfing and volunteered at many tournaments in the Rochester area. Giving back to his community was important to Matt and he volunteered at Eastman House working on landscaping, he ushered at Rochester theater events, and he helped out his elder aunts, neighbors, friends giving rides, helping with grocery shopping - whatever they needed.

Matt lived a rich life, easily making friends both young and of his own generation. Matt will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Matthew, predeceased by his parents Louise and Matthew J. Sr. and sister and brother in-law, Elizabeth and Melvin E. Ross. Survived by his nephew; Melvin M. (Bud) and wife Carol Ross and their 2 children, Shawn (great niece, Ariana) and Shannon (Derrick) (great niece and nephew, Alyssa and Garrett) of Newark, NY; nephew, Michael K. and wife Kathy Ross and their 3 daughters, Genevieve, Katherine (Alex Hemphill) and Madeline of Lunenburg, MA; his special cousin, Cathy Stein and many other cousins and friends.

No prior calling hours. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery and a celebration of life will be arranged at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made in Matt's name to the Webster Comfort Care Home 700 Holt Rd. Webster, NY 14580.
