Elgie Lee Richard Jr Obituary

Elgie L. Richard, Jr., a Veteran of Dessert Storm and longtime resident of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on December 5, 2023, at the age of 60. He was born January 17, 1963, in Topeka, Kansas to Elgie Lee Richard, Sr. and Helen Marie Grubbs. He was preceded in death by his father and a daughter, Kimbra Anderson.


He attended East Topeka Jr. High and graduated from Topeka High School. While in high school Elgie was an athlete participating in football and track.


Elgie served in the United States Army from August 23, 1983 to May 5, 2005. In his military career, he ascended to the rank of Sergeant. His primary specialty was Military Police. He saw action in Iraq and was a decorated veteran of Operation Desert Storm. He received the Army Achievement Medal-2, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal-5, National Defense Service Medal-2, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal with Bronze Star, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal (Kosovo) and numerous other medals. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, as friends and family can attest.


While in the military he married Vanessa Leota Dixon on January 17, 1996. She survives. He also leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, Helen Marie Richard; stepsons, Damon Webb and Clyde McGlory; stepdaughter, Marlaina M. Webb; brother, Darren German (Amy); sisters, Crystal L. Grant (Elston) and Tracey Wallace (Lawrence); granddaughters, Brai’Lynn Anderson and Xavayra Gill; grandsons, Ahmad Winston, Tre’Vaughn Rainer, and a host of other family and friends.


Sgt. Richard Jr. will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.He will be laid to rest with full honors at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
