Annie Sue Stewart Obituary

Annie Sue Goodson Stewart, 95 of Memphis, TN, died December 08, 2023 at her home in Memphis, TN.

She was born in Calhoun City, MS in 1928 to Raymond Robert and Mary Lillie Parker Goodson.

Services honoring Sue will be held Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at 1:00pm at Pryor Funeral Home, Calhoun City, MS, with Bro. Jim Vance officiating. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, from 11:00am until service time at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Calhoun City.

She graduated from Derma High School where she met the love of her life, James R. Stewart. James, having just come home from WWII was driving her school bus. Sue would save him a seat each morning on the bench next to the wood stove to warm up, upon arriving at school. They were married August 5, 1947, at New Gauley Baptist Church in a double ring ceremony after a revival service. James and Sue had 2 children, Robert Steven Stewart and Leigh Anne Stewart Gary. Sue was a talented seamstress, cook and avid gardener. She grew the most beautiful azaleas, hydrangeas, and roses. In the spring her yard looked like a Botanic garden.

Her favorite role was being a grandparent. She loved being called Mamaw. She treasured time with her grandkids and loved being their Mamaw. She never failed to cook them a good meal or sew up something special when she knew they were coming to visit. In her final days, she was worried about them and said she wished she had more time with them.

She then loved to spoil her great-grandsons, and her eyes would light up every time they entered the room. She loved sharing her cookies and peppermints with them every visit and simply hearing about all the things they enjoyed.

She spent most of her life as an active member of Derma Baptist Church, but after their move to Memphis, she became a member of Bartlett Hills Baptist Church with her family.

She'll always be remembered for her love of Christ, family, ice cream and chocolate.....in that order!

We couldn't have asked for a better Moma or Mamaw. She loved her Lord with all her heart and soul. We know we will be together with her when our time comes to leave this world, until then, we will miss her every day.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents Robert Raymond and Lillie Parker Goodson, her husband of over 65 years, James R. Stewart, 11 brothers and sisters, her great grandson Coy Smitherman, and her best friend since childhood Mary Nell Lantrip.

She leaves behind her daughter and caregiver of the last 21 years Leigh Anne Stewart Gary (Dwayne) of Memphis, her son, Robert Steven Stewart (Marie) of Greenwood, her grandson, Derek Gary (Annie) of Memphis, her granddaughters, Misty Davis (George) of Greenwood, Amy Smitherman (John) of Greenwood, and Stephanie Jewell (Mike) of Olive Branch, and 4 great grandsons.
