Everett Spaulding Marshall, Jr. Obituary

Everett Spaulding Marshall Jr. was born on April 30, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland to Everett Spaulding Marshall Sr. and Cornelia Kathlyn Nash. The second of three siblings, Everett grew up in Washington, D.C. with his older brother, Thomas, and younger brother, Raymond. Everett’s ingenuity creativity, and wry humor were evident even at a young age when he would spend his time playing games of all kinds and building models. The competitive joy he felt from playing games and the attention to detail he learned from building models were the foundations of the passion for excellence that he would be known for throughout his life.

Everett was also known for having a strong work ethic, independent spirit and natural leadership skills. He picked up his first job delivering newspapers in middle school, when he would wake early before school, rousing his little brother, Ray, and the family dog, Jet, to go deliver papers. These traits continued to develop as a boy scout earning merit badges in Troop 550 or as a cadet in McKinley Technical High School. During his weekends and high school summers, Everett worked at his father’s shop, Ace Auto Body. Everett and his brothers enjoyed an active social life in the youth ministry activities at Asbury Methodist Church, which was another key pillar of his upbringing.

After graduating high school, Everett worked at the Post Office for a time while attending Howard University. In November of 1964, Everett was joined in holy matrimony to his former wife, Rita Eileen Hall of Washington, DC. From this union three children were born, Gregory Coan, Everett Spaulding III, and Keren Elizabeth.

As a young father, Everett worked for C&P telephone company doing framework during the day and attending University of Maryland University College at night until he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Upon completion of his degree, he was quickly moved to a management track at the phone company. Even with his challenging schedule, Everett made time to volunteer as a scout leader for Pack 340, his sons’ Cub Scout troop. He was also active as a leader in the community, serving as the president of Neighbors, Inc, a nonprofit focused on improving relationships among homeowners in the increasingly racially integrated sections of their Takoma Park neighborhood. And yet, he could also be counted on as an exceptional handyman and fantastic constructor of Halloween costumes. After the breakup of the telephone company, Everett moved to Morris County New Jersey, where he worked for AT&T until he retired after thirty years.

On February 9, 2000, Everett was joined in holy matrimony to Beverly Murphy. Everett enjoyed traveling, reading science fiction and thrillers, watching movies, playing games, and spending time with friends and loved ones. Everett brought laughter, smiles and his pleasant demeanor to any room he entered. After an extended illness, Everett departed on December 2, 2023 at Springtime Home in Bowie, Maryland. He was surrounded by family and friends until his final moments. Although he was preceded in death by his son Gregory, he leaves behind his devoted wife, Beverly; his son Everett (Michele McLeod), his daughter Keren (Tom Dolan), his step-daughters Tracy (Charles Bell), Kim; his grandchildren Cameron (Bó Szabo), Ethan, Caleb, Madeleine, Dechen, Julia, Carl James, and his step-grandchildren Victoria (Elon Eddy), Tiffany, Isiah (Ashley Pridgen), Kendra and Samantha; step-great granddaughter Shiloh. He also leaves behind his brothers Thomas (Elaine Briggs) and Raymond (Era Shipp) and many nieces and nephews, all of whom love and miss him dearly.
