Lorraine L. Newell Obituary

Lorraine Newell, 76, of Gloucester, MA passed away peacefully at Lahey Clinic in Burlington on Monday, November 27, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of 43 years of the late Jones E. Newell Jr. who predeceased her in 2014.

Lorraine was born in Gloucester, MA in 1947. She grew up in Rockport, MA, and moved to Miami, FL in 1959, where she graduated from North Miami Senior High School in 1965. She then moved back to MA where she met the love of her life, Jonesy. They married on September 12, 1970, and together they built a home, raised four children, and enjoyed a houseful of children and a menagerie of animals from cats, dogs, chickens, pigeons, koi fish, and many more.

Lorraine’s home was the hub of the neighborhood. She was known for her warm, loving, and witty demeanor. She was “Mom” to all the neighborhood kids growing up. Kids enjoyed swimming in the family pool, sleepovers, making home movies, and endless dance parties in her living room.

In between raising her busy family, she and Jonesy owned and ran Atlantic Discount Oil along with friends and colleagues Terri and Bob Jones for 25 years before retiring. She was a loving caregiver to Jonesy in the last years of his life following a stroke. She was a doting Nana to six boisterous grandchildren. She listened without judgement, loved and supported all, and had a kind word to say about everyone. She loved to laugh and was the first to joke and have a laugh at herself. Above all, she loved and valued family and was happiest when surrounded by her large loving family. She will be endlessly missed.

She is survived by her four children, Kelly Lilly and her husband Sean of Rockport, MA; Kim O'Reilly and her husband Patrick, of Nahant, MA; Chris Newell, and Amy Newell both of Gloucester, MA; and her six grandchildren, Nora and Adam O'Reilly; Jonesy, Eamon, Mary, and Danny Lilly; her nephew and niece, Bob Barnes and Christine Dwyer; brother in-law Dale Barnes; many friends, and her beloved cat, “Oreo”.

She was predeceased by her beloved sister and best friend, Janice Barnes in 2020.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 5-7 p.m. at the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA 01930, and a brief service on Saturday morning, December 2, 2023, at 11 a.m., also at the Greely Funeral Home.
