Obituary

Mr. KHAC-SUON SU, Ph.D., P.E., affectionately known as "Doc Su," passed peacefully on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the age of 88.

Originally from Kampot, Cambodia, Mr. Su came to the United States to pursue an engineering degree. He obtained both a master of science degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now the New York University Tandon School of Engineering). He became a U.S. citizen in 1972.

He met his wife, Elizabeth or "Betty" Aitken, originally from Scotland, in New Jersey, where they married and settled for more than 50 years. He is survived by Betty and three daughters, Katherine, Christine (Don), and Allison (Hunter), and one granddaughter, Mackenzie.

A brilliant civil and structural engineer, "Doc Su" loved creating plans and designing bridges and buildings. His desk was always covered in blueprints, and long before the implementation of computer-aided engineering, he was known for being able to complete complex calculations in his head. He was often sought-out for resolutions to difficult problems by his colleagues long after retirement, and continued to consult well into his 70s.

He loved good food and a good laugh, and he will be much missed. He will be laid to rest in Cambodia, where part of his heart always remained.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice
