David James Nail

<p>David James Nail passed away at the age of 83 on November 17, 2023, after a lengthy illness. He was born and raised in Salinas. After graduating from Salinas High School, he took a firefighting position with the Division of Forestry, eventually becoming a foreman at the Morgan Hill station. After numerous years traveling to various catastrophe fires, he left to begin a career with Pacific Bell, retiring after 27 years.</p><p><br></p><p>David was a man of many talents and had a quest for new adventures throughout his life. He was a true advocate for the outdoor life from surfing, skiing, coaching soccer, camping, and fly fishing. He loved his children and devoted many hours to their school activities, always there for them and their friends. The famous “Orange V.W. Bus” was constantly on the go!</p><p><br></p><p>Through his tenure in the Carmel Ski Patrol, David volunteered at numerous local events requiring First Aid assistance. He was involved in the Red Cross, the “Wheelchair” restoration at</p><p>Pt. Lobos and at the local Rodeo. David had a generous heart, giving above and beyond to local schools. He never said “no” to a group or person who asked for his assistance.</p><p><br></p><p>David was known as an exceptional cook, with his barbeque chicken and homemade chili a ritual at many school and family occasions. He faithfully planted a huge vegetable garden each year, sharing the bounty with family and friends. He became extremely proficient at the art of jams and jelly from his numerous fruit trees.</p><p><br></p><p>David is survived by his daughter Mindy, his son Josh, and grandchildren Jackson, Ava, Quinn, James, and Julia.</p><p><br></p><p>A special thank you to the wonderful staff at Vista Harden Ranch Assisted Living for their exceptional care.</p><p><br></p><p>At David’s request, there will be no memorial service. In celebration of a life well lived, let’s raise a glass (wine preferred), smile a smile, and remember a person who was one of a kind!</p><p><br></p><p><br></p><p><br></p>
