William Charles Gohl, Sr. Obituary

William Charles Gohl, Sr., known affectionately as Bill, was born on August 17, 1929, in Alpena, where he also peacefully passed away on November 15, 2023. A loving and gentle soul, Bill's life was characterized by his unwavering devotion to his family, his service to his country, and his love for adventure.

Bill was the son of the late Peter and Lillian (Lumsden) Gohl. He grew up in Alpena alongside his brothers, Earl, Gordon, Russell, and Norm, who all preceded him in death. On February 9, 1952, he married his beloved wife, Helen Townsend. Their union spanned an incredible 70 years, during which they raised three children, William Gohl, Jr. (Cathy Schultz), Richard (Marina) Gohl, and Jo Ann (Jim) Taylor.

During the Korean War, Bill served honorably in the U.S. Army. His patriotism and dedication to service were attributes that he carried throughout his life. Upon his return, he embarked on a lifelong journey of hard work and commitment to his family. His work ethic was unparalleled, and he passed this down to his children and grandchildren.

Bill was a man of many interests, among them playing cards, hunting, and fishing. He also had a deep love for traveling, having visited all contiguous 48 states in his lifetime. Bill was always on the move, constantly seeking new experiences and adventures. Yet, despite his busy schedule, he always found time for his family. His love for them was evident in the time he spent with them, whether it was a quiet evening at home or a family vacation. Bill was a long-time member of Greely Baptist Church.

He was the proud grandfather to Cassandra (Fred) Suszek, William III (Shellie) Gohl, Terri (Gene) Northrup, Tracy Lester (Josh Taylor), Richard Gohl, Christopher Gohl, Kevin Gohl, and the late Tim Lester. His legacy also includes twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. His many nieces and nephews will remember him fondly as a loving and gentle uncle.

Bill is at McWilliams Funeral Home where visiting hours will be held on Monday, November 20, 2023 from 4pm-8pm. Visitation will resume on Tuesday from 10am until the time of the service at 11am with Rev. Bruce Rueben officiating. Military honors will be accorded by VFW Post 2496 and the U.S. Army. Interment: Long Rapids Twp. Cemetery
