Obituary

Anna Marie Mazur, a pioneering woman in the field of computer programming and a cherished member of the Alpena community, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on November 5, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Detroit on September 5, 1947, to the late Joseph and Mary (Darmofall) Mazur, Anna's enduring spirit, selflessness, and love for her family and community will forever be remembered.

Anna was a trailblazer in her professional life, shattering the "glass ceiling" as one of the first female computer programmers. Her tenacity and dedication to her work were a constant source of inspiration to her colleagues and those who came after her in the field. Her legacy in the tech industry serves as a testament to her determination, intellect, and unwavering commitment to progress.

A devout Catholic, Anna was a dedicated member of Alpena All Saints Parish, where her faith and commitment to service were evident. She lived out her faith in the way she cared for her family and friends, always prioritizing the needs of others before her own. Anna was also actively involved in the Alpena Senior Citizens Center and Friends Together, proving that her dedication to her community extended far beyond her professional career.

Growing up Anna was a bit of a “tomboy”, wanting to play sports and everything else her brother did. She was always tough and strong. Anna had a zest for life that was reflected in her many interests. She was an enthusiastic participant in her beloved book club, where she was known for her insightful comments. Her passion for puzzles, which she often likened to solving complex programming codes, kept her mind sharp and her spirit engaged. An avid fan of mystery shows, Anna was often the one to solve the case before the detectives on screen.

Her greatest joy, however, came from her family, particularly her grandchildren. Whether she was taking them golfing or simply spending quality time with them, Anna's love for her grandchildren was evident in every interaction. She is survived by her sons, Christopher (Heather) Burgess and Leroy (Hope) Burgess; her grandchildren, Javon Burgess, Myia Burgess and Nylena Bostick, Tre Burgess, Dylan Burgess, Noah Burgess, and Isaiah Burgess; as well as several close friends and extended family members who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Burgess and her son, Harold Burgess.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church with Rev. Tyler Bischoff as celebrant.
