Donald Smith was born in 1935 in Carrot Creek, Alberta, to Frank and Isabel Smith.
He grew up with siblings Alan (Mona), Brian (Barb) and Audrey in Carrot Creek, where Don said he would ride a horse to school but 'only on the days he could catch it'.

Don left school and started working very young. He always enjoyed nice cars, even proposing to his wife Jean (Bossert) from the glovebox of a '55 Pontiac. She accepted and Don and Jean were married on August 22, 1959.

For most of their marriage Don and Jean lived in Edson in the same home and raised their three children, Jerry (Patti), Doug (Kathy) and Donna (Cliff). For many years Don was employed in the oil field, working long hours. He had a very strong work ethic that he instilled into all of his family. When he wasn't working, he was spending time with his family, going golfing or going camping and on fishing trips. He also enjoyed spending time with all of his grandchildren, Brent & Sandi, Jennifer, Russell, Ryan & Stephanie, and Taylor & Shandi. On the day he passed away, he also had 12 great grandchildren.
Don always had an appreciation for the Bible and in his later years spent a lot of time reading and drawing comfort from the scriptures. After his retirement he spent more time with family and friends and also enjoyed gardening and puttering in his garage.

He was constantly frustrated by what his body or family told him he couldn't do, especially when told he shouldn't be up on ladders or on the roof.
In 2018 Don had a major cardiac event that weakened his heart. Then in 2021 his sister Audrey died, which greatly saddened him and in June 2023 his youngest granddaughter Shandi passed away, which was truly heartbreaking for him. At 88 years of age, with his heart weakened, he passed away peacefully at the Edson Hospital. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

 A Memorial Service will be held at the Edson Legion on November 12th, 2023, at 2pm.
