Norma Jean Wiedel, 90, Lincoln, formerly of Deshler and Hebron, departed this life on July 27 th at Harbor House. The only child of Harvey and Elsie (Vishnefske) Stephenson, Norma was born near Hebron, Nebraska.

Norma attended rural school District 50 north of Deshler and Deshler High School, graduating in 1949. She was united in marriage to Edward Wiedel in November 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hebron. This union was blessed with two daughters: Shirley and Sharon. The family farmed near Deshler for over 50 years.

Norma enjoyed raising her children on the farm and working part time at Village Fashions and Hansen Veterinary. Upon retiring, she planned a new home in Deshler and helped in obtaining a grant and building an arboretum for the city at Centennial Park. The first tree planted was a blue spruce given to her by her husband.

She enjoyed caring for her only granddaughter, Kimberly, when occasion occurred and her visits to the farm while she was growing up. Norma loved gardening and all animals, large or small. She had many favorite pets. She truly had a “green thumb” and revived many houseplants that others had given up on much to everyone’s amazement. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Hebron and a member of St. Ann’s Altar Society. She belonged to

Thayer County Extension Club Friendly Neighbors and later joined Merry Moderns Extension Club.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward, in-laws Bernard and Elizabeth Wiedel, brothers and sisters-in-law: Loraine and husband, Melvin Schnegelberger, Bernadine and husband, Buzz Timmermans, Henry Wiedel and wife, Evelyn, Herbert Wiedel, Ernest Wiedel and wife, Darlene, Charles Dvorak, Kathleen and husband, Lee Dell Thompson.

She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Wiedel of Lincoln and Sharon and husband, William Gewain of North Carolina; granddaughter Kimberly and husband, Ryan Cakerice of NC and great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Landon

Cakerice; her sisters-in-law, Genevieve Dvorak, Jeannette and husband, Don Dutcher of Colorado and Delores Wiedel of Hebron; and nieces, nephews and friends.
