Luther Harvey Hays Obituary

Luther Harvey Hays, 67, of Lancaster, Texas, passed away early January 2018 at his home. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Hopeful Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery. Rev. Doug Hall will officiate. Pallbearers will be Charles (Bubba) Baggs, Greg Findley, Drew Harvey, Ted Hays, David (Dimmer) West, Danny Williamson and Frederick Hand, IV. Honorary pallbearers will be the Mitchell County High School graduation class of 1968. Born February 8, 1950 in Bainbridge, Georgia, Mr. Hays was the son of Wilma Harvey Hays and the late Luther Henry (L.H.) Hays of Hopeful. He was preceded in death by his sister, Henrilu Hays and his brother, James Alton Hays. A graduate of Mitchell County High School, Mr. Hays graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia with a BBA degree. Most of his adult life has been spent in the Dallas, Texas area where he was involved in business and roof contracting. Growing up in Mitchell County, he worked on the family farm and enjoyed all outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and water sports on the Flint River. Survivors include his daughter, Katherine Hays Miller and husband, Aaron and grandchildren, George, Annie, and Grace Miller of Boston, Massachusetts; mother, Wilma Harvey Hays of Hopeful; two sisters, Willa Hays Alexander and husband, Tom of Greensboro, Georgia and Frances Hays Hand and husband, Fred Hand, III of Atlanta; and brother, Peter Hays of Hopeful. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Ramsey Alexander Martin (Scott) of Decatur, Thomas Alexander, Jr. (Kelsey) of Savannah, Frederick Hand IV (Kelly) of Atlanta and Eleanor Hand Mitchell (Anthony) of Brisbane, Australia. Visitation will be from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. before services in the Jones Building at Hopeful Baptist Church.
