Raymond Carl Porter, affectionately known as “Ray” was born October 15, 1938, to the late Mr. Mitchell and Ms. Katherine Porter of Pittsburgh, PA (formerly of Birmingham AL). On Tuesday, June 13, 2023, a life of caring and sharing ended when he was called home to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Richard (“Ricky”); sisters, Gloria, Juanita, Katherine, Linda, Mildred, Rosetta and brother, Frederick (“Freddie”).

Ray grew up on the north side of Pittsburgh and attended Pittsburgh Public Schools. Ray gave his life to Christ at an early age and joined the Avery Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, where he was a member of the Choir. Ray was employed by the Rehabilitation Institute for 26 years. He was kind-hearted and enjoyed working with and helping co-workers, children and other people.

Ray met and united in holy matrimony to Mrs. Annie M. Pettway (Porter) and remained married for 49 years. He served as a husband, head of household, father, grandfather, mentor and friend to many.

Ray will be lovingly remembered by: his wife, Mrs. Annie M. Porter, one daughter, Chauntae (Akoth) Ondiegi-Clemmons of Columbus OH, brother, Carl Porter of Pittsburgh PA, mother-in-law, Mrs. Carrie M. Pettway of Camden AL; five sisters-in-law, Lulu Synder of Pittsburgh, PA, Anita (Mark) Finney-Anderson of Kimberly AL, Lucille Pettway of Orlando FL, Carrie (Mitchell) Saunders of Cary NC, Gloria Peak of Blythewood SC; three brothers-in-law, Eugene (Yolanda) Finney of Birmingham AL, Arthur James Finney (Estella) of Lansing MI, Jimmie G. Pettway, Jr. of Camden AL; nephews, Brian, Damone, Eric, Kevin, Lamont; nieces, Linda, Michelle, Morgan, Pamela, Tamara, Tawanda and a host of other relatives and friends.
