Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them. ~ Revelations 14: 12 - 13

WILMA DELOIS CLAIBORNE JOHNSON was born on March 1, 1942, in Emporia, VA, to the loving parents of the late Mr. Harry and Mrs. Verlie Prince Claiborne. She was the fifth child of thirteen children. Her Christian parents emphasized the importance of respect, loving thy neighbor, honesty, sharing, nurturing others, and family love. She learned many life lessons during her youth that would carry her throughout her life.

At an early age, she was baptized at Church of God in Washington Park Emporia, VA. Her Christian faith continued as a member and Trustee of Salem Baptist Church in Emporia, VA until God called her home.

Wilma was a devoted 30-plus-year garment factory industry professional. She traveled across the U.S. garment industry learning and mentoring other garment professionals. Throughout the industry, she was known as a hard-working businesswoman, a person of integrity, and excellent character. To date, she was the only Emporia woman who helped create (Lucky 13 Inc.), owned her company (Dee’s Drapery Inc.), and managed (Box Rebellion Inc.) with 150 plus employees. When a higher need arose, Wilma left the industry to support her daughters and grandchildren (military and other professional careers).

On July 1, 1961, Wilma married Brutus L. Johnson Sr. Together they lovingly reared their children Linda “Denise”, Deanna, and Brutus Jr. Her journey through parenthood was the true highlight of her life. Her biggest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and especially great-grandchildren (she boasted about having four generations). Wilma was known as the family Matriarch with a no-nonsense attitude, a love for organizing, and fixing food for family and friends’ social gatherings.

Wilma loved serving her community and politics. She was a Girl Scout Brownie Leader for many years, a member of the community housing project committee, a Washington Park Improvement Board member, helped organize the Neighborhood Watch, and helped establish the Washington Park Association LLC. She also served as an NAACP member, Democratic Party member, and dedicated voting poll worker. Throughout her life, she exhibited the same professional qualities of a hard dedicated worker and passionate leader.

After a short illness in the early morning of June 2, 2023, Wilma transitioned to eternal peace with her Lord and Savior. Although she was loved by many people, God loved her best by not allowing her to suffer any longer from her illness. She was preceded in death by parents Mr. Harry and Mrs. Verlie Prince Claiborne; husband, Brutus L. Johnson Sr.; son Brutus L. Johnson Jr.; brothers, Willie Prince, Harold Claiborne, and Wayne Claiborne; sisters, Clara Brown, Edith Robinson, and Linda Jordan, and son in-law, Timmie Harrison, Sr.

Wilma leaves to cherish her legacy: two loving daughters, Linda D. Harrison of Emporia, VA, Deanna L. Johnson of Chesapeake, VA; two stepdaughters, Theresa Carbitt of Emporia, VA and Linesther Carbitt of Lansdowne, PA; four grandchildren, Timmie Harrison, Jr. (Ciara) of Richmond, VA, Whitney Anderson of Laurel, MD, Brittany Harrison-Ellis (Darryl) of Emporia, VA, and Brandon Johnson of Chesapeake, VA; three great-grandchildren, Torrie Harrison, Kamdyn Ellis and Camille Harrison; one sister, Audrey Brown of Richmond, VA; six brothers, George Claiborne, and Tyrone Claiborne (Dynetta) both of Richmond, VA, Joe Claiborne (Delores) of Lawrence, VA, James Claiborne of Baltimore, MD, Buford Claiborne of Emporia, VA, and Bobby Claiborne of Prince George, VA; her beloved, 102 year old aunt, Ruby Pearson of Cambridge, MA; sisters-in-law, Mary Malone Blanche Moore, and Alice Ervin all of Delaware; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Wilma’s wisdom, love, energetic spirit, and legacy will be forever cherished.
