Steve Mackie Woods Obituary

Steve Mackie Woods, formerly of Toledo, OH transitioned to eternal life on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at The Heritage in Findlay, OH where he received skilled care since late 2019. He was born in Crumpler, WV on September 8, 1941, the son of Charles and Alice (McGrady) Woods. He later moved to Toledo, OH and met Patricia Blake, and the two married at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Toledo, on April 22, 1967. Steve and Pat had one son, Scott Steven, the joy and pride of their lives.

Steve was a hard worker, spending over 23 years at the former DeVilbiss Company. During part of that time he served as union chairman, representing the needs of fellow colleagues and their families. Known as “Woody,” he was respected by both his coworkers and company management for always seeking what was right and just in pursuit of the common good. Always committed to his family, Steve loaded semi-trailers at the former Roadway Express at all hours of the day and night after DeVilbiss closed its Toledo plant. Six months later, in February 1990, he suffered a major heart attack. Again, mindful of his commitment to his wife and son, Steve was in line at the unemployment office the day after being discharged from an 11-day hospital stay. He was eventually placed on disability and always struggled with not being able to go back to work.

In the meantime, he soon became Scott’s chauffeur from school and to other events. He also prepared dinner for his family daily. A special treat was his homemade biscuits and sausage gravy following Mass on Sunday mornings. An excellent cook and baker, Steve would often take homemade treats to the staff at his doctor’s office and elsewhere. Having endured many health issues and having lived with severe hearing loss for decades, Steve was compassionate and attentive to the needs of others, always doing what he could to help, which included baking bread for the celebration of the Mass at Corpus Christi University Parish and preparing homemade dinners for University of Toledo students each school year.

Steve is survived by his son, Father Scott S. Woods; sisters, Helen Shumate and Darlene Hausner; brother, James Dolinger; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Diane Blake; dear friends, Charlie and Bonnie Threet; and his committed caregiver and honorary daughter, Mamie (Charlie) Yeagle; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, his wife of 52 years, and his siblings: Kenneth Woods, Lora Lee Collins, Nancy Towne, Shirley Towne, and William Woods.

Visitation will take place at All Saints Catholic Church (628 Lime City Road) in Rossford on Sunday, June 4, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. A Vigil for the Deceased will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. On Monday, June 5, there will be another period of visitation from 9:30-10:30 a.m., at which time the Funeral Mass, presided over by Steve’s son will be celebrated and livestreamed on the All Saints Catholic Church Facebook page. The Rite of Committal will immediately follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Toledo.

Steve’s loved ones are deeply grateful to the many dedicated workers at The Heritage who took such good care of him for nearly four years and became part of his family. They are also appreciative of the staff at Bridge Hospice, as well as the team of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion from Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in Findlay, who regularly brought him the Bread from Heaven in Holy Communion. Those who wish to honor Steve’s memory are invited to do so by considering a contribution to Central Catholic High School in Toledo or Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in St. Meinrad, IN.
