Joan Rowena Cain Obituary

Joan R. Cain, “Snooks”, passed away on May 30, 2023, at the age of 82.

She was born on November 13, 1940, in Ridgley MD, the daughter of James and Marie Boyce.

She grew up in Ridgley and attended Lockerman High School.

As a young woman, she went to Philadelphia to pursue a cosmetology license and subsequently opened a beauty shop in Denton, Maryland. She married Alvin Cain Jr. on June 9, 1962.

She worked in various shops in Washington DC and when the Air Force assigned Alvin to Germany, she went with him. In 1967 she opened a shop in West Berlin, Germany. When she returned from Germany, she continued working in various shops in Washington DC. When the Air Force assigned Alvin to Japan, she went with
him and opened shops in several military bases. Upon returning to the DC area, she volunteered to work at a school with children who had Cerebral Palsy

She then purchased a hair salon in District Heights, Maryland and worked there for 15 years. Her youngest daughter Paula (Denny) came to work with her as a cosmetologist and eventually became the shop manager. They took great joy in pretending that they weren’t related in front of customers that didn’t know any better.

In 1995 she and Alvin moved back to Ridgley and she opened another shop where she worked until she retired. Joan was active in Replanted Zion Methodist Church which became New Beginnings United Methodist Church in Ridgley. During COVID she watched services online and hardly ever missed a Sunday service.

She loved soap operas, it was an endless source of enjoyment for her; discussing who did what and who would do what.

She is survived by her husband, Alvin R. Cain Jr., her son Alvin R. Cain III and his wife Roberta, and Paula Cain Geer and her husband Wayne, her nephew Ronnie and his wife Willia, grandchildren Laronda Richardson, Jackson Cain, Sophia Cain, and by a host of nephews, nieces.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Ellsworth (Skip), James Jr. (Brother), one sister, Peola (Peasie), daughter, Shina Boyce and grandson Jered Cain.
