Cloie Lucilla Mack was truly a phenomenal woman, she was petite in stature but a powerful force and pillar of strength to her family!

Cloie, born to Robert and Ethel Mack was born on October 13, 1934. She was a lifetime resident of Cross South Carolina. She attended early schooling in Cross, SC., however in seeking
post elementary schooling, she found it unavailable for her in Cross because of segregation. Undeterred, she went to Charleston and lived with her Uncle and Aunt, Arthur and Marthena
Guest, to attend Burke High School (graduated in 1951). Still yearning to go forward, she enrolled in Claflin College in Orangeburg, South Carolina, her mother’s Alma mater. Cloie
graduated from Claflin with a BS Degree – Class of 1956. She began her teaching career in Central High School/Elementary as a beloved fourth grade classroom teacher. Inspired by the
influence of her principal and mentor, the late Mrs. Ruth Townsend, Cloie was encouraged to pursue a master’s degree in education at the University of Indiana. After receiving her Master’s
degree, Cloie became a Reading Specialist and thrived in her career receiving many accolades, including Teacher of the Year- 1985-86.

Cloie was a loyal member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church. She sang on the choir for many years and served as a nurturer to the sick and shut-in. She was a devoted member of
Berkeley County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Jehovah Chapter 203 OES (Eastern Star). She enjoyed singing and serving others. Her passions were baking, canning
fruits, shopping for outfits and hats and owning fancy cars. She always enjoyed having a nice automobile.

Cloie loved her family and especially after her mother’s passing in 1966, she stayed in the homestead in Cross to care for her father. Cloie became the matriarch of the family

Cloie married the late Harry Castleberry in the early 1960’s and to that union her daughter, Monica Lashawn Castleberry was born. Sadly, Monica became the “littlest angel” after three
months.
Cloie later married Reverend Robert Mack of St. Stephens the former Pastor of Jerusalem Methodist Church.

Although Cloie’s official residence was in St. Stephens, she never truly left the family homestead in Cross. She was dedicated to the home that her parents built and their legacy. She kept the family home alive, and it became a gathering place for family members throughout the years for short stays and family reunions.

Cloie transitioned peacefully on May 30, 2023 Cross will not be the same without the presence of Cloie!

Preceding her in death are her parents Robert and Ethel Mack, Daughter, Monica, Brother Robert E. Mack (Bob), Brother-in-law Ernest Woodley.

Leaving to cherish her memory are:
Brother, JD Mack, Brother Robert Ferguson (Claudia), Brother Alfonza Mack (Truenetta), Sister Mary Woodley, Brother Henry Mack (Patricia), Brother Arthur Lee Mack (Margaretta), Sister
Junerous Whitten (Lawrence) and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
