Josephine Delores Crump (Granny) was born to the late Otelia Ruffin and John Hayes on March 12, 1936 in Petersburg, VA. She departed this life, Thursday, May 25, 2023.

She was preceded in death by her husband Oscar Ruben Crump, three children, Osborne Jackson, Velma Brown and Meredith Jackson, two granddaughters, Cherita Short and Lauren Turner, each of her siblings, Jack, Lovander, John Shelton, Ernestine Jones and Iris Rogers.

Josephine was educated in the Petersburg Public School and later worked in the healthcare industry as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

She worked over 35 years in the tri-cities Nursing Home Facilities as a CNA, and retired from Golden Living Center in Petersburg, May 2012 which is now Petersburg Healthcare Center.

She was kind to everyone and had a great sense of humor. She would spend hours reading a good novel. She loved cooking, gardening with her husband and spending time with family and friends.

Over the past five years, Josephine was a participant in the Innovage/PACE Seniors’ Program, Richmond, VA. There she would meet other participants from Petersburg and they all would sit together and their bonds became stronger. They were referred to as “The Petersburg Crew”. She also met other participants and built strong friendships. Some of her most memorable outings included: Musical concerts in the park, shopping trips, dining out, and bingo. She would often refer to the staff members of Innovage/PACE as her second family.

Josephine leaves to cherish her memories two daughters: Sandra Howell (James), Petersburg, VA and Lottie Turner (Larry), Stafford, VA; one sister-in-law, Carol Matthews (Bernard), Maylene, AL and one daughter in law, Rita Jackson, Petersburg, VA.

She also leaves six grandchildren, Tony Harrison (Yvette), Easton, PA; Terrence Jackson, Manvel, TX, Michael Jackson (Tomesha), Bowie, MD, Michele Jackson, Richmond, VA, Cameron Austin, Chesterfield, VA and Sandrell Short, Dinwiddie, VA. Twelve great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, family and friends. A graveside service will be held 11 A. M., Friday, June 2, 2023 at Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA. Rev. Calvin Lewis, Sr., officiating.  Public visitation will be held from 10am-7pm, Thursday, June 1, 2023 at the funeral home.
