Ethel M. Chambers Douglas Obituary

Ethel Chambers Douglas, 93, of Hartford, beloved wife of the late Frederick C. Douglas, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 15, 2023.

Ethel was born in St. Catherine, Jamaica, daughter of the late Michael Charles Williams and Josephine Augustine Gordon Williams, and attended local schools. She was employed in banking and cosmetology before obtaining her Associate's Degree in Nursing, where she practiced in New York as a Licensed Practical Nurse, retiring after many years of service. Ethel loved the Lord and was a faithful communicant of the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford and served as a member of their choir and prayer groups.

Ethel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend. She will fondly be remembered as a caring and giving woman who loved her family more than anything. She took very good care of her brothers and sisters and made sure they all traveled safely to the United States to create better lives for themselves. Ethel had a nurturing spirit and would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. She always went out of her way to help her family the best way she could and took it upon herself to take care of everyone and make sure they had everything they needed. Ethel and Frederick were very focused on education and ensuring that their family was well educated in whatever field they were pursuing.

In her younger years, Ethel loved to sew and often made her children's clothing. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed making all the comfort foods of Jamaica for her family. Ethel also loved to garden and sing, and enjoyed traveling with her late husband, Frederick.

Ethel is survived by her children, Patricia E. Beckford and her husband of New Britain, and Delroy Douglas of Hartford; her stepchildren, Yvonne Douglas of New York, NY, Lucille Douglas of Cliffside Park, NJ; Frederick Douglas, Jr. and his wife Anita of Silver Spring, MD, and Lewis Timoll and his wife Cynthia of Bloomfield; her grandchildren, Efraim V. Whitworth, Calvert B. Whitworth, Jr., Ruthcecelia J. Whitworth, Elias Whitworth, Shannon Douglas, Desiree Douglas Clady, Arthur T. Carter, Jr., Jonathan Carter, Anthony Douglas, and Michael Douglas; her great grandchildren, Ivy Elias Whitworth, Darius and Noah Douglas, Malik and Chanise Foster, Aaliyah Douglas, and Knox, Kobe, and Olivia Clady; her brothers, Art Williams and Owen Williams; special nephew, Rupert Gore; special nieces, Dawn Williams and Gweneth Douglas; her very good friend, Cara Santoro; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her stepdaughter, Melody Carter; stepsons, Winston “Nobby” Miller and Berris Cunningham, Sr.; and grandson, Nicholas Douglas.

Her family will receive friends on Friday, June 9, 9:30-10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10:30 a.m., at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 140 Farmington Ave., Hartford.

Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield.
