Ethel K. Higgins

<p>Ethel K. Higgins,89, of Saco, Maine, Formerly of Bangor, Passed away on May 13, 2023, after a long illness. She was born to the late Andrew and Elizabeth Kurki in Monson, Maine. She graduated from Monson Academy and later from Husson College in Bangor. She was happily married to the late Donald P. Higgins.</p><p></p><p><br></p><p>Ethel was a nurturing and compassionate person who was an outstanding professional homemaker. Her family had nutritious meals three times daily, beautifully tailored home-sewn clothes, and a comfortable and well-maintained home.</p><p></p><p><br></p><p>Throughout the years, Don and Ethel were a joy to watch on the dance floor. They would travel miles to attend a good dance even when they were in their seventies and were members of the Saturday Nighters. They also enjoyed cross-country skiing and hiking.</p><p></p><p><br></p><p>Ethel was very proud of her Finnish heritage and, along with Don, played a significant part in revitalizing the Finnish Famers Club in Monson, Maine, a club in which she had been involved since its inception in 1937. She applied and achieved Finnish citizenship, even visiting Finland several times.</p><p></p><p><br></p><p>Ethel is survived by her three children, Melinda McCardell of Dayton, Maine, Karen Higgins of Ocean Park, Maine, and Timothy D. Higgins and his wife, Melanie Marshall of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Ethel is also survived by her six grandchildren, Jennifer Green, Nathan Yerxa, Rebecca Vigue, Benjamin Yerxa, Holly Banet, and Megan Higgins. She also leaves behind four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.</p><p></p><p><br></p><p>A memorial service will be held at the Finnish Farmers Club in Monson, Maine, on July 29, 2023, at 4:00 PM</p><p><br></p>
