Sister Doris Mary David Nolte

<p>Sister Doris (Mary David) Nolte, O.S.B., passed to eternal life on the Ascension of Our Lord, Sunday, May 21, 2023, at St. Benedict Monastery, Bristow, Virginia.</p><p><br></p><p>Sister Doris was born on October 27, 1929, in Richmond, VA to William Joseph and Helen Cecilia (Kusterer) Nolte. She attended both St. Benedict Catholic School and Saint Gertrude High School (’46). Upon high school graduation, she entered St. Benedict Monastery on September 8, 1946, and professed perpetual vows on May 11, 1952.</p><p><br></p><p>Sister Doris began her religious service in education, serving at Linton Hall School in Bristow, and at Sacred Heart School, St. Paul School, and St. Gertrude High School, all in Richmond. Upon achieving her nursing certificate, Sister Doris began a new phase of her religious life as a registered nurse, which she continued until her retirement. She then shared her expertise with the program BEACON for English Language and Literacy, teaching students preparing for nursing school. In addition, Sister Doris was appointed Subprioress of the monastery and later Formation Director for the postulants and novices beginning their monastic lives.</p><p>Sister Doris was deeply committed to Benedictine life. Her faith was rooted in her love of Scripture, and all who knew her were touched by her humility, gentleness, and kindness. In her later years, Sister Doris happily offered much time in knitting hats and scarves for the homeless. She was very devoted to her extended family; her nephew Mark and family, Claudia, Clelia, and Arabella, lived close by and were a source of great comfort and delight.</p><p><br></p><p>Sister Doris is survived by the members of her monastic community, a sister, Mary Ann Sheehan of Richmond VA, and many nieces &amp; nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Helen, and her siblings Rev. William “Billy” Nolte, Robert “Bobby” Nolte, David Nolte, and Marguerite “Peggy” Nolte Benedetti. </p><p><br></p><p>A Vigil service will take place at St. Benedict Monastery on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 6:30 PM, and a Mass of Resurrection on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at 10:30 AM with burial following at the monastery cemetery. </p><p><br></p><p>In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia.</p><p><br></p><p>Please sign the guestbook at www.bakerpostfhcom.</p><p><br></p><p><br></p>
