James “Jim” Heustess, an influential and respected figure in the waste management industry, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 74 on May 20, 2023. A man known for his unwavering dedication to his family, business ventures and health, leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all.<br><br>Jim was the founder of American Waste Systems, Inc., and his entrepreneurial journey also saw him co-founding American Refuse Systems, Inc. (ARS) in the 1970’s and First Tee Transport, Inc. (FTT) in 2002. Throughout his illustrious career, he proved to be a leading figure in shaping waste management services in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia.<br><br>Jim was born on May 23, 1948 in Columbus County, North Carolina to the late James and Doris Heustess. He had a generous heart and always put others before himself. He was a man of robust health and was deeply committed to maintaining a heart-conscious lifestyle. He was a beloved family man, survived by his son, Meares Heustess a sweet grandson, James Kegan Heustess, a sister, Doris Anna Tolan and the love of his life, Rose Marie Heustess.<br><br>Jim’s life was a testament to hard work, dedication and the enduring spirit of entrepreneurship. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched throughout his incredible life.<br><br>A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 from 2:30 - 4:30 at the PineCrest Inn in the Village of Pinehurst. Another celebration for all his friends in the Lake Gaston area will be announced soon.<br><br>Services are entrusted to Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines.<br>
