George Karl Stennett Obituary

George Karl Stennett, 91, of Chambersburg, and formerly of Waynesburg, PA, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Chambersburg Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 13, 1932 in Kittanning, PA, he was the son of the late George William and Mary E. Williams Stennett.


George was a 1950 graduate of Kittanning High School. A US Army veteran, he served honorably during the Korean War. He attended Penn State University until he enlisted in the Army and finished his degree after his military service graduating in 1956. He later earned a Master’s Degree from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. George was employed as Borough Manager in Waynesburg, PA and later as Executive Director of Industrial Development in Greene County, PA until his retirement after 31 years of service.


He belonged to Waynesburg Lodge #153 F&AM, Pittsburgh Syria Shriners, and Scottish Rite Valley of Pittsburgh. He was also a member of the Penn State Chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi, Elks Lodge #600, and a life member of VFW Post 1599 in Chambersburg. George was an avid reader, enjoyed golfing, hunting and working on projects at his home. He also enjoyed camping and tailgating at Penn State Football Games with his family in their motor home. He was an avid Penn State, Steelers, Pirates and Iron City Beer fan.


He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sallie Huffman Stennett, whom he married on May 20, 1960; two sons, Samuel J. Stennett and wife Laura of Shippensburg, and Jon D. Stennett of Chambersburg; three grandchildren, Sydney Stennett of Monroeville, Nicole Stennett of Pittsburgh, and Karl Stennett and wife Victoria of Chambersburg; one great granddaughter, Amelia Rose Stennett; and his many Penn State family. Aside from his parents, George was preceded in death by five siblings, John Stennett, Donna Gangloff, June Helm, Phyllis Crawford and his infant sister, Virginia.


Services and interment will be private.
