Elsie Deloris Backous Obituary

Elsie Deloris Backous, 87, of Boone, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2023, at her home in Boone.


Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, June 8, 2023, at Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel, 1006 6th Street, Boone. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 9, 2023, at Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel.


Elsie was born September 26, 1935, in Boone, the daughter of William and Opal (Staley) Rogers. She worked at Mallas’ Café in West Boone, where she met a young man, Robert L. Backous, at the age of 16. Elsie was united in marriage to Robert on February 19, 1954. They made their home on an acreage on West Mamie Eisenhower for many years, where they raised their family.


Elsie was employed as a CNA at Eastern Star and the Boone County Hospital and she later worked in the kitchen at Casey’s in West Boone.


Elsie enjoyed going to Las Vegas with her husband and family, camping, fishing, bingo, garage sales, spending time with her children, and grandchildren.


Bob passed away on March 13, 2017, shortly thereafter, Elsie moved into the Avon Apartments, where she made many friends. Her favorite pastime was visiting her friends and sitting on the porch with her lady friends and waving at everyone that drove by. Elsie had a very happy life there with “The Ladies”.


She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Robert L. Backous, Sr.; two brothers, Jim Rogers and William Rogers; and a sister, Hazel Disbrowe.


Elsie is survived by two sons, Robert (Jeannie) Backous, Jr., of Boone and Harold (Lori) Backous of Boone; three daughters, Janie (Bill) Davidson, Sharon (Rick) Braland of Ogden, and Diane (Steve) Braland of Story City; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
